FAQs

  • A fibroblast is actually a type of cell that contributes to the formation of connective tissue, a fibrous cellular material that supports and connects other tissues. Fibroblast cells secrete collagen proteins that help maintain the structural framework of tissues. Fibroblasts contribute to that plump, youthful appearance in our youth, but as production decreases over time, that collagen begins to break down causing wrinkles, skin crepiness, sagging and signs of aging.

  • Plasma Pen is a new and revolutionary non-surgical treatment to lift and tighten loose, wrinkled skin with results lasting up to 4 years! It is particularly effective for the face and neck areas that were traditionally treated with plastic surgery or dermal fillers. But plasma fibroblast can be used to treat anywhere on the body that is showing loosening of skin or signs of wrinkles.

  • Plasma fibroblast therapy uses a pen-like device that discharges a high-frequency electric current to small areas of the skin. The plasma tip doesn’t directly touch the skin, but instead releases a targeted current just above the skin. The hot current ionizes the air above the skin and creates micro-injuries in the epidermis, targeting fibroblast cells in the dermal layers of the skin to break down proteins in the skin, encourage tissue regeneration, stimulate fibroblast activity, and cause tissue contraction (tightening). The healing process that begins here is the magic of this procedure, allowing healing pathways to kick into gear and build back that dermal layer, plumping and lifting the skin!

  • The best candidates for this procedure are people with mild-to-moderate wrinkling concerns; and those with Fitzpatrick skin types 1-3, sometimes 4, and in some cases 5.

You should NOT receive plasma fibroblast therapy if you are: breastfeeding, pregnant, have an allergy to topical anesthetic preparations, have an infection at the treatment site, are using tretinoin or hydroquinone for wrinkles or acne (this list is not conclusive to all restrictions preventing treatment). For more details, please look over my waiver for a more comprehensive explanation of contraindications and details about this procedure.

In addition, IF you have a history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring, it’s recommended that you approach plasma fibroblast therapy with caution. It’s important to talk to your healthcare provider prior to this procedure if you have any health concerns, autoimmune conditions or unchecked moles. And always discuss your treatment goals and concerns with your Plasma Fibroblast Technician. You can book a consultation and make sure to READ and fill out all intake forms so we can get a snapshot of your overall health condition.

If you have darker skin tones, this means you have more melanin in your skin and unfortunately this treatment may not be for you but please consult with your practitioner. There are always patch tests available where we can see if hyperpigmentation is a real risk for you. There have been cases where plasms fibroblast has worked for people who tend to have more melanin in their skin, but it is important to consult with your provider and patch test first.

  • Healing varies, but typically the dots come off in about 1 week. Sometimes sooner and sometimes longer. Treatment areas from the neck down take longer, around 2 weeks, for the dots to come off. Dots can begin falling off as early as day 4/5 on the face, but as long as they aren’t scratched or bumped off, healing should cycle through on its own. And for some people, they take longer to heal and could have dots until day 10. It all depends on your skin, any underlying conditions, how well you follow your aftercare instructions, among many other factors.

Swelling usually occurs around the eyes beginning the first day following treatment and will begin to subside around the 3rd or 4th day, mainly only if we treat the eyes. Please click over to Before/ After Care blog posts to read more about healing and after care.

Once the dots are gone, healing continues through 12 weeks for this procedure, as collagen and elastin are building in the dermal layers. You will see your skin transform over the course of this time. Stay nourished, moisturized and protected from UV rays while the skin regenerates.

  • We use numbing topical creams to alleviate any discomfort. Depending on length of treatment and coverage, some discomfort may occur which is mild to moderate. However, we are generous with our numbing creams to avoid any discomfort at all.

  • Yes! We absolutely can address pesky skin tags. Your technician will want to examine any skin tags first to be sure they are benign (non-cancerous). If any uncertainty about skin tags arises, we will not administer treatment to the area. Doctor’s notes may also be requested if there is any question about skin tag removal. Always have moles and skin abnormalities examined by a medical healthcare professional.

  • Fibroblast plasma skin treatments are not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding individuals, or those hoping to get pregnant. With this procedure, there is always a slight risk of infection and we do not want to risk this for a developing fetus. Also, pregnant women tend to have an increased production of melanin in the skin, producing a mask-like appearance on parts of the face, known as melasma. When melasma is developing, we do not want to undergo plasma fibroblast due to increased risk of hyperpigmenting with treatment. Even if you are breastfeeding, you should avoid fibroblast treatments until you have weened your child and you are cleared from any post-partum symptoms. Once you are no longer breastfeeding we can consider plasma fibroblast as an option.

  • Like any facial treatment, laser treatment or surgery, there are always risks involved that have to do with cleanliness and sanitation, medical health history, after care instruction, among others. Plasma fibroblast is truly incredible with what it can do for overall skin health, laxity and complexion. However, some people do end up with hyper or hypo-pigmentation where the crusts fall off to reveal a darker or lighter skin tone underneath. This can be avoided in most cases by consulting with your tech, following strict aftercare protocol, staying OUT of the sun, patch tests, and choosing an experienced and knowledgeable technician. Hyper and hypo-pigmentation can appear to look like faint dots at the treatment site. This kind of pigmentation can occur with this treatment unexpectedly, even if you aren’t prone to it, but is absolutely something we can help if it does occur, which is rare. There are many products on the market that help with dark spots, scars and/ or hyperpigmentation so IF this pertains to you, please get in touch with your tech and we will recommend products that will help clear up any scarring or pigmentation that resulted from your treatment. But again, more often than not, results are brilliant and clients are truly amazed!

In addition, we want to keep the treated area clean as clean can be. With this treatment there is risk of infection so we want clean hands always whenever we touch or apply product. Sometimes light bleeding can occur on the dots during treatment and possibly 1- 2 days following your procedure, but this is normal. The carbon crusts are scabbing up over the initial few days, and with facial movement, especially around the eyes and sometimes forehead, some of the scabs may bleed but they will scab and heal with the rest of the crusts throughout the healing process. Just always keep the area clean and dry and you won’t have any issues.

And finally, if you use products that are harsh or chemically on the skin post-treatment, this can result in other contraindications. Please always discuss product use with your technician. Some products have ingredients that can cause irritation and should be avoided during the first week of your healing. For most clients, we provide vetted aftercare products for clients to use during healing. Staying clean and nourished during this time is critical to reach your desired results.
